Ephemeral sculpture
Vintage lace, crochet lace, nails
Norma is a roughly two metre squared hanging landscape of collaged, crochet lace pieces, each of which has come undone, their threads unraveling towards the floor. The large scale work engulfs the audience as they stand close to the work, touching, smelling and taking in the details of the lace. In this way, I want to reflect on the intimate relationship between Art and Faith, using lace I inherited after my Great Aunt passed away to engage with the fear of death. As the lace speaks to age and time, both in its laborious creation and yellowed, musty threads, it is also reminiscent of moss, lichen and bones through form. As the pieces unravel, so the finality of death is questioned, speaking to my Great Aunt Norma’s hope of embodied resurrection.
