Ephemeral Sculpture
(lamingtons, skewers, mdf board, red paint)
1901 is an ephemeral sculptural object, exploring the construction of Australia’s national identity. It exists as a model of Old Government House in Brisbane built out of lamingtons, referencing Lord Lamington, Governor of Queensland 1896-1901 whose household the cake recipe originated from. An Australian icon, lamingtons tie the work not only to the history of the Federation, but also to the narratives of national identity we uphold. On the back of the rejected Voice referendum of 2023, this work asks its audience to consider how Australia has failed to create a stable, lasting or inclusive national identity, and continues to ignore, deny and perpetrate colonial oppression.
